A bright kitchen can make it easier to prepare your meals, boost your mood and energy, and increase overall satisfaction in your home! Below are ten helpful tips to keep in mind if you’re ready to lighten up your kitchen!

There’s no doubt that your space can positively or negatively impact your mood, creativity, and enjoyment of your home.

If an all-white kitchen is not your favourite look, there are easy ways to brighten up your space! It just takes a little creativity and willingness to try something new. Before you know it, you’ll be loving your bright kitchen!

These ten tips are not super expensive, and almost all of them don’t require major renovations, so you can quickly get back to enjoying time in your kitchen!

1. Take Advantage Of Mirrors

Mirrors reflect light and make a small kitchen feel more spacious. If you don’t have a lot of wall space, you can try a floor mirror to reflect more light into your kitchen.

There are plenty of trendy floor mirrors from oval to round and square. You don’t need to go overboard, but the proper mirror placement gives the illusion of more space.

2. Swap Dark Paint Colours For Lighter Shades

Swapping out dark or moody paint colours for neutral colours like white or soft beige will do wonders for your space. Something as simple as changing the paint colour can make a dark room feel bigger and brighter!

Are you not feeling an all-white kitchen? No worries, you don’t necessarily need to do a white paint colour. There are plenty of warm neutral, or soft colours that will give you the calming and bright look that you’re hoping to achieve.

3. Refurbish The Existing Cabinetry And Hardware

If your kitchen cabinets are dark wood, an option could be to refurbish the existing cabinets. Dark wood cabinets can make your kitchen feel darker and smaller.

Kitchen cabinetry takes up a lot of space in the kitchen, so an option could be to resurface the existing kitchen cabinets to a lighter colour, like a creamy white cabinet colour with a matte finish. Or, if you have the budget and time, you can choose to install new kitchen cabinets.

It’s a great way to make your kitchen feel brighter and change the overall look of your kitchen! Another idea is to swap out the existing kitchen hardware if it doesn’t fit your style or needs a refresh.

It’s a small change, but it can have big results if you decide to change the cabinet hardware on the cabinet doors.

4. Remove Kitchen Window Coverings

Remove any dark or heavy window coverings to let in more natural light. You may not even need blinds in the kitchen. But, if you need or like the privacy from your window coverings, you can replace the existing window coverings with light colour blinds.

Or, change to adjustable blinds so that you can control how much light comes in. A lot of light comes in from the upper portion of a window so if you do want privacy, you can get blinds that only cover the bottom half of the windows.

5. Change The Kitchen Backsplash

Changing the darker kitchen backsplash to a lighter colour or to a more modern backsplash will positively impact the look and feel of your kitchen!

If you’re updating your countertops, you can change the backsplash so that they are seamless for a more uniform look. Or, alternatively, one of the best ways to add a pop of colour or unique design to your kitchen is with your backsplash.

6. Swap Out Dim Lightbulbs And Light Fixtures

You could install pendant lights over the sink and kitchen island or add LED lights under the kitchen cabinets. Both of these options will help to brighten your kitchen.

Your countertops are the most used surface when preparing your meals, so adding extra lights under the cabinets will improve the functionality of your kitchen.

A minor adjustment that is inexpensive is to replace dim lighting or burnt-out light bulbs with brighter bulbs.

Or you can change your existing lighting fixtures to a style that contributes more light to the room. Pendant lighting offers a good variety in addition to recessed lighting.

7. Change Dark Countertops

This will likely be the most expensive cost depending on the size of your kitchen. However, changing your dark countertops to lighter countertops can be an excellent way to make your kitchen feel more open and lighten up your working space.

8. Kitchen Floors And Area Rugs

If you have dark kitchen floors, an option could be to replace them with a lighter colour. But, if they’re in good condition and you don’t want to take on the added expense or time to replace the floors, you can pick out a couple of light-coloured rugs and position them in certain areas over the floor.

Rugs will add warmth and texture to your space and eliminate some dark flooring so that it’s not overpowering.

Light wood floors are fantastic for creating the illusion of more open space. For instance, if you have a room that doesn’t get much natural light, it may need help to prevent it from feeling gloomy.

Not only does lighter wood flooring fool the eye into thinking there’s more space than there actually is, but any natural sunlight will reflect off the floor, too! Adding to the illusion of even more space.

9. Remove Excess Clutter

Excess clutter in front of your windows can reduce the amount of natural light that comes through to your kitchen. But that’s not the only thing. Too much clutter can overwhelm you and create negative feelings of stress and anxiety.

Take some time to remove any unnecessary clutter or items you don’t use or need. It’s a good idea to have a designated cupboard or concealed area for items so that they’re not in view when you don’t need them.

10. Install Open Light Wood Shelving

Open shelving adds warmth and gives you more storage space in your kitchen. In addition, you can use the wood shelves to display dining bowls and plates, photographs, or accent pieces!
